This Wollensak 18 inch f4 Verito Diffused Focus lens is an 11x14 coverage lens designed for soft focus and pictorial photography. The lens is so named from the latin for "truth, varity, and reality". The lens uses purposefully uncorrected spherical aberration to create a "halo" effect around the subject: this particular lens was famous in use photographing "soft" portraits of glamourous celebrities in the early 20th century, when sharpness was believed to be unflattering. As the lens is stopped down, the second optic which produces this soft diffusion is counteracted, making the lens sharper.
The 18 inch focal length (457mm) is roughly equivalent to a 45mm lens on 35mm.
